Lisbon is one of the destinations where house sitting can genuinely change the economics of your trip.
The reason is simple.
Lisbon rent is expensive.
House sits are relatively plentiful.
When we checked TrustedHousesitters in October 2026, there were around 21 Lisbon-area house sits listed.
Across Portugal, the platform was showing roughly 72 sits.
That makes Lisbon considerably more interesting for house sitters than many classic digital-nomad destinations.
What kinds of Lisbon house sits appear?
Recent listings included:
- central Lisbon apartments
- Graça
- Parque das Nações
- Penha de França
- Alcântara / Ajuda
- city-centre apartments
- Cascais-area villas
- Estoril
- rural properties outside Lisbon
Pets ranged from single cats to multiple dogs and cats.
Sit lengths ranged from a few days to two weeks or longer.
Why Lisbon works so well for house sitting
Accommodation is the expensive part of Lisbon.
Food and transport are relatively manageable.
So removing €1,000–€2,000 of monthly accommodation costs changes the destination completely.
A month might look like:
Two-week house sit + two-week apartment
instead of:
30 nights of paid accommodation.
That’s a meaningful saving rather than a token travel hack.
Search beyond Lisbon city
This is important.
The broader Lisbon house-sitting region includes:
- Cascais
- Estoril
- Oeiras
- Carcavelos
- Sintra
- Ericeira
- Mafra
- Torres Vedras
If you’re flexible, searching the entire region gives you far more options.
Central Lisbon sits
These are particularly valuable because you can usually live without a car.
Check:
- nearest metro or train
- hills
- lift access
- dog-walking requirements
- supermarket distance
The beautiful apartment in Graça may come with a very enthusiastic dog and a vertical commute home.
Cascais and Estoril
These can be excellent sits for anyone who wants coastal life rather than central Lisbon.
Both have train connections into Lisbon.
A good sit here can actually be more appealing than a central apartment, particularly for a longer stay.
Rural sits
Outside the core Lisbon area, transport changes quickly.
Some listings require a car.
Others may provide one.
Never assume “Lisbon” means you’ll be hopping on the metro.
Look at the exact pin.
How competitive are Lisbon sits?
Desirable city sits can attract applications quickly.
The strongest combination tends to be:
- good location
- attractive home
- easy pets
- longer stay
- good public transport
If you’re serious about house sitting Lisbon regularly, set alerts rather than checking occasionally.
House sitting after 50
This is one of the areas where being older can work in your favour.
Homeowners are looking for someone they trust with their home and animals.
A profile showing maturity, reliability, pet experience and previous sits is valuable.
After more than a decade of house sitting, I would focus far more on whether the sit fits your life than whether the property photographs look impressive.
Check the building
Lisbon adds several questions I don’t necessarily ask in every destination:
- Does the building have a lift?
- What floor?
- How steep is the street?
- How far is the dog walk?
- Is there heating in winter?
- Is there air conditioning in summer?
- Is the apartment damp?
- How noisy is the street?
Historic Lisbon apartments can be beautiful and deeply impractical at the same time.
House sitting vs renting in Lisbon
This is where I’d actively use house sitting strategically.
Suppose you’re staying three months.
Rather than finding a three-month rental immediately, you could potentially combine:
- a one-month apartment
- two or three house sits
- a short hotel or serviced-apartment gap
It requires more organisation.
But in a rental market above €25/m², the saving can justify the effort.
Is Lisbon good for first-time house sitters?
Yes, particularly a central apartment with one or two cats.
Lisbon is easy to navigate, English is widely understood in international settings and emergency services and vets are readily accessible.
I would avoid making your first sit a remote property with multiple animals and a car requirement.
Can I work remotely while house sitting?
Usually, yes.
But read the responsibilities first.
A cat apartment can be incredibly easy to combine with remote work.
A dog requiring several long walks per day creates a completely different schedule.
